Assessing A2a Adenosine Antagonists as a Novel Anti-parkinsonian Agent Using a A2a Receptor Knock-out Model

Dr. Jiang-Fan Chen of Harvard/Massachussetts General Hospital, used his team's transgenic mouse model in which the A2A receptors were "knocked-out." By comparison with wild-type mice, these transgenic animals became less parkinsonian when the neurotoxin MPTP was administered, and A2A antagonistic drugs enhanced their motor activity. Dr. Chen suggests that such drugs may prove to be neuroprotective against DA neuronal degeneration.
